This bug appeared under the Chromium browser but went away under Firefox.

Even so, it may be worthwhile to think about how ${DOLLAR} is defined so that

BEGIN_TEXT
${DOLLAR}2 and \( ${DOLLAR} 2 \)
END_TEXT

work in html mode and tex (pdf) mode.
