Out of curisity, what do you mean by "many" servers.  Default installations of
recent version of CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu and Fedora all had the server version
in the banner.  Is removing the version number something that sysadmins do
manually?  In that case the conf variable seems like a reasonable choice, and
would be easy enough in any case.
