I couldn't reproduce the error.  I tried it with $a=4 but it marked your
student's answer correct.  Could you be running a very old version of this
problem?  Back in 2014 a bug was fixed that might have caused the issue that
you described.  If you are running a very old version then perhaps it would be
good to ask your webwork administrator to update your problem library.  You can
