WebWork homework sets – Creating a set with material outside your text.

This tutorial assumes that you want to create a homework set, and you either are not in the happy position where someone has put many problems from your text in the NPL, or you want to supplement the problems you found on a particular topic with problems from another sources.

For this tutorial, we assume that we have a class titled Experiment2 for which we want to create a homework set on the product rule. This class currently has one homework set, titled Chpater3Section2.

We open the “Library Browser” and create a set called Product Rule.

We get a message that the problem set has been created. We notice that the library currently has 17415 problems. In the drop down menu for Subject, we select Calculus.

This reduces our available problem set to 8787 problems. Under Chapter we select “Differentiation”. Under Section we choose “The Product and Quotient Rules”. We are left with 175 problems.

Push the View Problems button. This gives us a view of a page of problems. We see a tag indicating where the source for the problem is found in the library. (That is useful if we want more problems of the same style.) Since I am only interested in the product rule, I select some problems, but not others. To add the selected problems to a set, push the “Update Set” button. (You need to do this on each page of problems. WebWork will not add problems form two pages at the same time.)

It is worth noting that some of the problems in the library seem to be duplicates of each other. We also have problems that are clear modifications of one another.

Going through the problems in this section, I added 24 problems to the set ProductRule. I now go back to the Homework Set Editor.

We see the new Homework set. Note that it starts out grayed out because we have not made it visible to the students. We would like to edit that homework set. We can either click on the 24 in the Edit Problems column, or we can select the set, and choose to Edit the Selected Set, and then hit the Take Action Button. If you take the second path you will be taken to a screen of homework sets to edit.

Select the Product Rule set, or simply click on the set name.

The header at the top lets you change due dates. You can also change whether or not the set is visible to the students. It s worthwhile to change the display mode to somethng that lets you see the problems. (I like jsMath.) Then hit the button to refresh the display.

We can now see the problems along with the weight given the problem.

Before making any changes, it is worthwhile to look at the homework set for a particular student. I either get there by going to the going to the Homework Set Editor, and selecting the number of users for a set, then selecting a particular user

or by going to the Class List Editor and selecting the number of assignments for a student, then selecting the particular assignment.

When I get to the individual homework set, I see that I can change the due and opening dates for a particular student. I also see the student has a seed assigned. This is the value used for random choices in the problem.

In particular, we had a couple of problems in the set, Library/maCalcDB/setDerivatives2Formulas/s2_2_6a.pg and Library/maCalcDB/setDerivatives2Formulas/s2_2_6a.pg that seemed to be the same in the homework set.

For this student at least, they become different problems of the same format.

This is the ralue used for random choices in the problem.

WebWork Tutorial For Importing Homework Sets from Definition Files. (This is a subset of the tutorial on Moving homework sets from one course to another)

(A) Background - The tutorial assumes that you have already exported a tar file of definition files, under the name of Experiment2.tar, and that file is on your desktop. We also assume that you have created a course, named Experiment3, and that you want to import the definition files has homework sets for that course.

(B) From Experiment3, upload the archived file. Go to the file manager and select browse, then find the file to upload.

Now select upload and see that the problem set has been added to the file list.

(C) Finally we want to import the problem sets into the new course.
Select the sets you want to import. It is easiest if we use the multiple set import option since it will provide a set name.

WebWork Tutorial For Exporting Homework Sets to Definition Files. (This is a subset of the tutorial on Moving homework sets from one course to another)

The basic process will be to:
# Export homework sets so that they are files available to the file manager.
# If several sets are included, create an archive to put all the sets in the same tar file.
# Download the archived tar file.

We now go through the process with lots of screen shots.

(A) Export a single Homework Set.

We start with a clean course called Experiment2. We create a homework set called FirstSet.

Looking at the files available under the “File Manager “ tab, we see the basic set of files, but nothing for the set we have created.

“We go back to the Hmwk Sets Editor” and select our problem set for export. (I have selected the set and chosen the export button. Hit the take action button.

See the intermediate step

Note the message that indicates we have exported a file.

If we now go back to the file list, we find the file setFirstSet.def.

(B) Suppose we now want to move a bunch of files from one course to another. Select the bunch of files.

Hit “Make Archive” and see the message that the tgz file has been created.

(C) Next you want to download the archive file to your desktop. Select the tgz file and hit download.

Setting up a problem set using problems from the National Problem Library.

Easy case – Someone has put a lot of problems from your book into the NPL.

In creating homework sets in WebWork, the easy case occurs when someone has done the hard work for you, putting many problems from the book you use into the NPL.

Examples –
The Hughes-Hallett Calculus text has a lot of its problems under Michigan
The Stewart Calculus text has a lot of its problems in under Dartmouth
[This list needs to be edited with other texts added.]

For this example we will be using the Hughes-Hallett problems from Michigan. (Many thanks to Gavin at Michigan for putting the problems into the NPL. Thanks also to the people at Wiley for giving him permission. This means that the Hughes-Hallet calculus text is easy to use with WebWork.)

We start with a new class called “Eperiment2” that has no homework sets assigned.

We go to the “Library Browser” on the left bar. In the browser, we see that there are no assignments so for.

We will create an assignment for section 3 from chapter 3, the product and quotient rules for differentiation. We name the homework set. We use the rather unimaginative name Chapter3Section3.

When we create the new set, we are asked if we wish to assign it to ourselves

We say yes and see that the set has been defined and it has been assigned to us. Since the text we are using has problems in the NPL (National Problem Library) we select that button.

When we choose problems from the NPL, we are given a drop down menu form which to select our problem set,

We simply select Michigan/Chap3Sec3 from the menu,

We then want to view the problems using jsmath.

We see a list of problems. Select some to add to the target set, and then select the button to update the set.

You get a message that the set has been updates and problems have been added to the set.

As you then look at the problems to add to the set you are told which problems are already in the set. You can add the same problem to a set more than once.

We then go back to the Homework Set Editor and see that we have created a set with 5 problems and it has been assigned t one person. Notice that the problem is grayed out and is not yet visible to the students.

If we select the number of problems in the set, it calls up the editor which lets us see the homework set.

From this screen we can change due dates, whether the assignment is visible to students, and the weight each problem gets.

We can also change the display mode. I like jsmath. Then we can see the problems.

Notice that 3 of the 5 problems are from the same source file and show up as the same problem. We would like to see how the problems appear to an individual student. Go back to the Homework Set Editor and select the listing of how many students this has been assigned the homework set. That brings up a list of people in the class. Select on and edit the data for that student.

This will give the version of the problem that that student sees.

Notice that the repetition of the problem comes with different seeds.
Depending on the complexity of the problem, we either get a repeated problem or a problem of the same kind.
