These instructions explain how to download and install a disk image of a fully functioning WeBWorK 2.5 system customized for WeBWorK consultants onto a 4 GB or larger USB flash memory drive.

USB flash memory drives

USB flash drives vary greatly in read/write speeds. We suggest using one with that has good specs. For example the SanDisk Extreme Contour drive (25MB/s read and 18MB/s write). Another good option is the Kingston 4GB DataTraveler 410 USB Flash Drive.

Installing WeBWorK on a 4 GB or larger USB flash memory drive

After installing the disk image on a USB flash memory drive, you will have a full fledged Ubuntu 12.04.2LTS 64 bit system with WeBWorK, Apache2, MySQL, etc. installed and configured. WeBWorK will have sample courses (maa101 to maa130) already set up each with a collection of nine problems sets, four of which are assigned.

Your USB flash memory drive will be identical to the flash drives which are distributed at WeBWorK Consultant Training Workshops.

Directions

Follow the directions contained in Installing_WeBWorK_on_Live_USB except that you should download the following md5 check sum and .iso file from either of the sites below. Download WW2.5_Ubun12.04_Consultant.iso.md5 and WW2.5_Ubun12.04_Consultant.iso

The above information in Installing_WeBWorK_on_Live_USB tells you:

This installation of WeBWorK and Ubuntu follows the instructions given in Installation_Manual_for_2.4_on_Ubuntu_10.04.
You can look there to find the locations of the WeBWorK files. None of the options Optional A, B or C are implemented.

The only change in this is that the option Optional A is implemented.

Networking

Networking is set up using a static ip address following the setup and directions in http://webwork.maa.org/wiki/Local_wf-fi_network#Configure_WeBWorK_server_networking

If you want to change this and use DHCP do the following

  1. Select System, Preferences, Network Connections
  2. Select Auto etho and click Edit...
  3. Select IPv4 Settings
  4. Next to Method: and scroll down and select Automatic(DHCP).
  5. Click Apply
  6. Enter <wwadmin password> and click Authenticate
  7. Click Close
