Bryan completed his undergraduate and master's degree at Western Carolina university in Cullowhee, NC. After teaching for several years Bryan was accepted to a doctoral program in mathematics at Clemson University in South Carolina. He successfully defended his dissertation in 2007 and began teaching at Ferrum College.
