To state the obvious, it looks like a problem with the cookie authentication between your server and the student's browser. I would be interested to see if the student gets an error if s/he specifically does not click the "Remember me" checkbox on the login page (I think this should result in the system using embedded keys to figure out authentication, rather than cookies).
