I think there are two separate (but related) uses for units. (Perhaps this is your "linguistic style" versus "dimensional analysis", which I didn't really understand.)

There are questions like "How long does it take until 50% of the population is sick?" where an answer like "26 days" is appropriate (and "26 day" would not). Similarly, "How wide is the board?" could be "10 inches" or "10 in" (but I would not want to allow "10 ins").

One thing I worry about is localization, however, as "inches" may need translation.
