I've been looking throughout the site to find documentation on changing the system and course messages, but I haven't had much luck. I'd like to use that feature to communicate with my students, since it is more immediate to a WeBWorK problem set than an individual email would be. Any tips on changing those messages?

Thanks for you help.

The system message:

In the .../webwork/system/ directory put a "message of the day" file called motd.txt . You can put any html commands in here that you want or just enter plain text. Make sure the webserver has permission to read this file (e.g. set permission to 644). If there is no motd.txt file under system/, WeBWorK will display the default message "None".

The course message:

This works exactly the same way as the system message of the day except that the motd.txt file for a course is placed under the courses templates/ directory.

For real experts only: The name of these files (which by default is set to motd.txt for both) can be reset by making a change in Global.pm. Search for "motd" in Global.pm
