We have been creating some problems involving square roots, which we were hoping to display in formatted text mode. The problem that we are running in to is that the square root symbol appears in front of the expression, but the bar does not extend over top of the expression. We are finding the same issue when writing conjugates. The bar command doesn't seem to put the conjugate symbol in the right place. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanx, Danny Glin University of Calgary

For square roots, making the expression displayed math,

\[ f(x) = sqrt{ x^2+1 } \]

helps. Displaying the expression might not make sense, but most WeBWorK problems are pretty short, so moving math into display doesn't really hurt things. Displaying also helps with fractions made with \frac. I haven't looked to see if it helps with bar for conjugates.
