We're in the processes of setting up a network  backup of webwork, and I have the following questions:
  • What is the minimum set of files that must be backed up?
  • Is it enough to back up the DATA directory of each course?
  • Can the classlist be recovered from DATA/ ?
  • Is DATA/ portable in case of a disaster, where the server must be replaced by another containing different hardware/OS?

Thanks,
Lars.

DATA and templates are the two directories needed for resurrecting a course.
DATA is OS independent, but database dependent. (gdbm is the default)

I have a bash script I use for backing up courses. I will make it available if you want it.
I backup the courses at the end of the semester, and move them to a different machine running a different OS for data mining purposes.

Actually the gdbm binaries are OS dependent. There are export and import scripts (binary to ascii and vice versa) but for these you must have WeBWorK running.

The classlist file is not used directly by WeBWorK but is only a convenient way to import or export a classlist database.  It can be exported from the classlist page.
