Our department is considering a vast increase in the use of webwork. Currently, I have one (undergraduate) student worker helping just a couple of faculty with their webwork use. The student worker has professor permissions in webwork and a unix account. In our consideration of using webwork on a wider scale, our department expressed some concern about FERPA and the access that the student worker would have to grades. Has anyone had some experience with this? Any thoughts?

Usually, one needs a "legitimate educational interest" to be allowed to see grades. I can't think of a legitimate interest for a PG coder to do so. But

  • perhaps it's sufficient if the school has an interest in allowing the student to see the grades (as it does, as that's by far the most feasible way for him to code the problems), and
  • if the student also answers students' WW questions via Feedback then one can argue that he must has a legitmiate interest in the grades.
