Meeting Announcement:
Shape of Educational Data Meeting
In Memory of Mika Seppälä
With funding from the National Science Foundation, Dr. Colleen Ganley and Dr. Sara Hart are organizing a meeting in the DC area, April 7-8, 2016, for researchers in educational psychology, learning analytics, and mathematics who are interested in analyzing data from online courses. The meeting will focus on using advanced topological, geometric, and Bayesian methods to analyze the shape of data generated by students taking mathematics courses via massive open online course (MOOC) systems. There is no registration cost, and hotel costs will be covered for out of town attendees.
The talks are tied together by their association with the World Education Portals online education courses initiated by Prof. Mika Seppälä of Florida State University and the University of Helsinki. Tragically, Mika passed away suddenly in January of 2015. Throughout his career Mika was active in harnessing the internet in the service of mathematics education and his infectious enthusiasm encouraged others to explore the educational opportunities afforded by this new medium. He is much missed by his colleagues.
