centered display math in PGML

In PGML, [``...``] makes display math. But it is not equivalent to the non-PGML \[...\] because it does not start a new line and center. Instead it seems to just insert \displaymath in front.

I know that one can put a line break in directly, and use >>...<< to effectively get centered display math.

But for working well with PreTeXt, it would be much better if a direct counterpart to \[...\] were available. What is the feasibility of making something like [``...``]* (with a star) to achieve that? (And I guess likewise for [:: ... ::]*?)

Alternatively, is there a "clean" way to step outside of PGML temporarily to use something like \[...\] directly?
