We are experiencing sporadic problems in the creating of gifs in 2 assignments, both when they are precreated and on the fly. So far only one instance of each has occured out of 600 students doing the assignment. Has any one else experienced such a behaviour?

This is a well known problem. If you have a fast server with a light load you will almost never see this problem. If you have a slow server with a heavy load, you will see it often.

For help on what to do see http://webhost.math.rochester.edu/webworkdocs/discuss/msgReader$312 and also http://webhost.math.rochester.edu/webworkdocs/discuss/msgReader$368

I wrote a couple of shell scripts to scan for the kinds of indicators Pizer mentions in message 312. They were not really written for general consumption, but it does give a way of scanning for the problem before turning it loose on the students.
