Webwork External Client Editor or Other Editor

Webwork External Client Editor or Other Editor

I will be doing a presentation for other faculty at my university to demonstrate the capabilities of Webwork. I saw the following post on setting up an external editor:

https://webwork.maa.org/wiki/Client_Editor

But it appears to be outdated. I began going through it, but got lost pretty quickly. Is there an updated version somewhere or is there perhaps some other online editor where I can show my coworkers the latest features?

FYI, we do currently use version 2.15, but it does not have the graphing tool, linear inequalities, etc. We will eventually update to 2.19, but I'm hoping that showing the latest features can convince more faculty to adopt Webwork. Thanks.

That approach is obsolete, and has been for a long time.  You can still edit a file locally and then copy it onto a server (in various ways) to see it rendered, but directly rendering a local problem is not supported anymore.  Most problems won't even work in that way anymore.  For example, you mention the graphing tool which relies on JavaScript to work.  That couldn't possibly work with a local rendering approach, and requires a browser.

Instead, we provide a rather nice problem editor in the browser that you can use that any instructor in a WeBWorK course has access to in WeBWorK itself.  There has been a lot of improvement to that, particularly in the last few releases and more to come in the next release.

Understood, thanks for the info. Though I'm still left with the version issue. Until our tech admin updates us to the latest version of webwork (which I'm guessing is this summer at the earliest), I'm stuck in limbo. I will try runestone mentioned below. If there was a website where we could use the problem editor without the need for an actual webwork course, that might be useful. I imagine it would be similar to online compilers/interpreters for other languages (such as https://www.online-python.com/). Not sure what the demand would be, but I would find it useful as our tech admins are fairly busy. We don't yet have a firm commitment on if/when updates will happen.

Runestone offers WeBWorK hosting, currently using version 2.19, and moving to 2.20 at the end of this summer.

For exploration and demonstrations, you are welcome to have a course. Even if there is no expectation of using the service with students. (There's only a cost when using the service with a real course with student users.) If you are interested please follow that link and use the intake form that is linked there.
