When executing the inital login.pl script suddenly the following error message began to appear (before going even to the password screen).

Can't locate /webwork/s1/WWW/webwork/system/courses/math135th/webworkCourse.ph at /webwork/s1/WWW/webwork/system//Global.pm line 604. Please inform the webwork meister.

This is before password authentication. I am prety certain that the necessary file (webworkCourse.ph) is in the correct directory, and with correct permissions (640). It does not appear that Global.pm or login.pl have been altered. Do you have an idea what may cause such problem.

Thanks a lot.

Yavor Markov

The address looks suspect. Do you actually have a course named math135th? From the unix command line, you can try successively to cd into each directory until you come to the file. Check the permissions as you go to make sure that the web server also has permission to execute each of these directories.

Also, group ownership of webworkCourse.ph may have changed if the file was edited. Confirm it is owned by the group the webserver belongs to.

Thank you for your reply. Thiis is a follow up on the message I posted at the WebWork discussion board.

Basicly, we checked the permissions of all files and the group has the correct permissions everywhere, and www is part of the group. The same problem occured today, and this time The system dministrator was able to look at it. A restart of the apache server fixed the problem. The log file for the server revealed about 10 www users with log times around the time the problem occured (2:00 am today) who were not loged out authomatically. The error log showed quite a few attempted Win NT hacks, which according to Risa (the sys. person) is not unusual And on Wednesday, the problem dissapeared without any assistance, so it might have been that the system reset some variables automaticaly and returned to the correct setup.

I am hoping that you may have a useful piece of advice on trouble shooting this problem. Is is possible for the webserver to go down when a sizable number (10-20) of users quit the system without logging off? We are quite puzzled what may cause this problem.

Thank you for your help with all this.
