I'm in my 4th year teaching math at a therapeutic boarding school for teens. I realized that my staying hours after school to grade my students' homework was not actually helping them learn more, especially if they were not getting some of the homework correct. (As one of my teachers used to say "Practice makes permanent.")
I am also trying to replace three courses ("algebra 1," "geometry," and "algebra 2") with three new secondary-math courses that meet the Common Core State Standards. Since I'm designing the courses from the ground up, I'd like to do what I can now so that I can be independent of textbooks in the future.
