Thanks to all of you who commented on the OS issue. We decided to go with Debian distributions in the near future. Speaking of which, we run into some problems with the set-up of the external programs. The path is correct, but dvipng consistently does not work, and latex2html is OK.

Also the -nosetpage option seems to be illegal for pnmtops even though the version of the latter is current. Is this a know problem for Debian?

Dvipng has gone through several updates in the past year. Some versions were buggy (with bugs discovered and fixes provided by people on this list). Personally, I keep meaning to update, but our main servers use version 0.5 without problems.

One thing which can help sort out dvipng issues is to just run it on dvi files from the command line: 

  dvipng file.dvi
You may be able to see right away if it is generating errors, or having trouble locating fonts, etc.
