Hi all,

At the University of Michigan we've been running WeBWorK on Solaris servers very happily.  However, College support of Solaris is going away, so the next server will be either Linux or MacOS.  Searching about, I found evidence of RedHat, Debian, and Slackware Linux servers supporting WeBWorK.  Are there others which people particularly like?  (Add to the Installation List!)

Also, are people (BillZ?) successfully running WeBWorK (especially WeBWorK2) on MacOS? 

Any and all comments are welcome.

Hi Gavin,

Debian is a good option - I have webwork2 running on a debian system. Debian also facilitates identical fully automatic installation (fai) on multiple computers through the debian fai package - see http://www.informatik.uni-koeln.de/fai/

Most of the packages required for webwork2 are included in the debian distribution. The couple that don't are perl modules that are straightforward to install.

We have run webwork on Debian for several years, and the performance has been flawless.

Let me know if decide on Debian, and I can point you to the needed packages.

One more try: is anyone out there using WeBWorK on MacOS X servers?  And if so, does it work well?

I have both WeBWorKs (1.9 and 2.0) installed on my iBook. There were some difficulties in installation -- chiefly getting GD and GDBM installed -- why I'm not sure, and I can't at present write a tutorial of how to get through that part. Once those were installed the WeBWorK specific stuff was fairly easy. It works a bit slowly on an iBook, when the browser is also on the iBook, but that is not surprising.

Davide Cervone uses MacOS X servers at Union college and likes them. He is probably the best source for information.

I haven't got it running on OS X yet, problems with gd (I tried using fink, but perl can't find them for some reason). I just gave up, and run a ssh window to a linux box.
