Hi,

As of now, the Student-ID is the same as the initial password. It would be nice to have separate fields for this - we use the last 4 digits of the SSN for password, but would also like to have a column for the student-ID.

Is it at all possible currently to use the last 4 digits of the SSN as initial password?

Lars.

You could put the last 4 digits of the SSN as the student-ID field before importing the class list. Do you even need the whole SSN?

Or, you could write a script based on the password changing script which goes through the roster, pulls the student id, takes the last 4 characters, and then changes the password. Then you would have to run it when you do the initial roster import, and it wouldn't help for students entered after that, but it is an option.

Hi John,

We do the former. So far I have checked that the 4 last digits of the SN's are different, but what happens if two students have the same last 4 digits? The instructions on

http://webwork.math.rochester.edu/docs/docs/courseadmin/classlistformat.html

says that the student-ID must be unique...

It would be a good thing to have an separate fields in the webwork2 database for student-ID and initial password, and only require that the student-ID is unique.

Lars.
