Are there any existing approaches to evaluating answers which are chemical formulas besides string comparison with all subscripts following underscores. Related questions: Is it possible to have several answer boxes one after the other, but some in the sequence shifted a bit down to serve as input for the subscripts? Are there commands to displace the answer boxes from their natural position? Cheers, Ivan

Hi Evan,

As for chemical formulas, I don't know the answer but I believe UC Irvine is using WeBWorK for chemistry. If you know someone in the department there, you might ask them.

I don't think there exists the type of macro you are thinking about with some answer boxes used for subscripts. Such a macro would have to handle html output and TeX output and hopefully shouldn't be too hard to write. Since I assume you want this for chemical formulas, I would first try to find out what the people at Irvine have done. E.g. http://homework.ps.uci.edu/webwork/chem1lb/
